Mommy ramblings

Day 1 of potty training was a mixed success. My main goal was to avoid the 8 hour hold that made me put Monkey back into diapers last time. I'd like to just let her wear diapers until she wanted to stop, but we can't start preschool until she's out of them, and the best daycare I can find still has TV on for about 3 hours a day,and feeds the kids junk.

We achieved pooping in the potty (something that has not been the issue), and peeing in the yard without a major freak out and stopping mod pee. That's after several times of starting to pee and stopping, and sitting dry in the potty at least 20 times today. I have 3 more days to get her peeing on the toilet volitionally before she's back in daycare.

Thank god for dry heat. It's 100 degrees today, but it just feels like the mid 80s does everywhere else I've lived. I'm outside with Monkey splashing in the kiddie pool after dinner.

Yesterday we purchased drawers to organize our tools and construction supplies (the danger of buying a house that needs work means an ever growing set of tools), and Mr. Paean and I spent the day organizing them, freeing up the built in shelves in the dining room. Today I worked on a project for Mr. Paean's home office, moved a shelf into the storage room, and put all the displaced board games on the dining room shelves. I'm feeling quite successful, even if we only managed to cross about 4 things off our 3 page list of immediate household projects that we want to get done this month. Also, our kind neighbor helped us put up Christmas lights!

This week work will be all consuming again, so getting a bit more done on the home felt good. Many weekends it feels like just getting the kitchen clean and running some laundry is a lofty goal with Monkey wanting to eat and play and snuggle with me. Instead, she "helped" with her screwdriver and banging on things skills.

One of the very, very best Snape Draco 7th year fics I've every read. It has (and imperfectly addresses) the expected power imbalance. Fantastic writing. Great development of the Slytherin 7th years as minor characters. This kind of thing is why I probably will never leave HP fandom.

Movie Rec

I just watched Pride and cannot recommend it highly enough. Despite being very well fixed in the 1980s, it feels very relevant.

It captures the burgeoning gay pride movement, along with the entrenched horribleness of homophobia. It also showcases the end of a strong labor movement, something that is just no longer represented in modern culture. Despite showing HIV/AIDS, individual and institutional intolerance, police brutality, and Margaret Thatcher, the message is uplifting. The ensemble cast is fabulous. I am a perpetual multitasker when watching movies, and I was riveting in my seat the whole time. I laughed, cried, and cheered. It's available on Netflix DVD, and well worth your time.

I just finished reading this, and I have so many feels. H/C at its finest. TW for the real fucked up nature of prostitution when no other option seems possible.

Sometimes when I have time, I search AO3 for new to me writers. It's mostly a bust. Good writers usually get picked up on and there are recommendations all over, but a few slip under my radar, and finding them is such a treasure.

If you are in the mood for a novel, and not scared by AU, this is an amazing work by a writer who I suspect will be turning pro soon. Stiles centric, incredibly interesting OCs, and set in the world of horseracing.

Stiles is five-going-on-six years old when his mother buys a pony. He's twenty-two when he takes a job offer as a groom in a racing barn (because anything is better than driving forklifts in a warehouse) and full-on faceplants into a world that he's spent his entire life sneaking glorified glimpses of. It's not clean, and it isn't pretty by any stretch of imagination, but somewhere in there he gets a vague notion of what it is that make this the sport of kings.

Another amazing novel, with magical Stiles, and a much more realistic look at how trauma in the show might mess someone up. Also has pretty awesome OCs. Warning for unsympathetic Allison. Canon divergent after 3A. There is a short story that starts the series, followed by this:

Push Pins

I am about to order push pins for my office space (dull beige and brown cubical walls). Looking on Amazon, I see the same color assortment options as when I was a kid, plus random decorative ones. That got me thinking, are there any fannish push pins I could buy instead? Work-safe of course.

Podficcer Etiquette Question
Rodin
paean_sf
I adore podfic. And even more than listening to podfic, I love listening to a story that I haven't already read. This especially holds true for longer stories, as they turn my commute into my favorite part of the day.

If a story is in a series, is it okay to ask someone who read the first story if they are planning on making a production of the second? I feel like a total lurker here, since I don't podfic. It seems terribly forward to ask, as if I am expecting someone will take their time and energy to create something, just because I want it. But I don't want the disappointment of reading the story myself and then a month later seeing it posted as a podfic. When that happens, I often still listen to and enjoy the podfic, but the magic of experiencing a story for the first time is lost.

I am specifically thinking about The Lure of the Moon by miss_aphelion. Rhea did an amazing rendition of Pull of the Tide by Miss Aphelion, and listening to the story unfold in her voice was truly magical.

Birth of a Dancing Star by [personal profile] asecretchord is a novel length 8th year epic. [personal profile] asecretchord is a delightful writer with in depth characters and great plot development. She's impressed me enough in the past that I started reading, despite knowing mpreg (not really my thing) was integral to the story line.

There's something to be said for a story that is so well written, it engages even a reader who does not normally look for the elements it contains. This is that story. I spent most of Friday and Saturday night immersed, and highly recommend checking it out.
